When I used my regular coffee maker, I ended up wasting most of it because I could only make a full carafe and not the amount I needed. That was a huge money sink, and I knew I needed to do something about it. The solution presented itself soon enough – a single serve coffee maker, the Keurig K55. In this article, I will share my experiences and a Keurig K55 review.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Single Serve Coffee Maker
A single serve coffee maker solves the often overlooked problem that other coffee machines have – they can only make huge amounts of coffee. If you’re a single person, living on their own, regular coffee machines quickly become impractical money sinks, but a single serve coffee maker is the exact opposite. It offers exactly what you need, when you need it – a fresh cup of coffee.
Single serve coffee makers are ideal for people living alone, students or small office environments. With these machines, you won’t ever waste coffee again.
They also save you a lot of time, especially if they are programmable. You can make a cup of coffee in under a minute without worrying about the mess. This makes it ideal for people who have a limited amount of time, like single parents for example. Brewing a nice, hot cup of coffee in seconds is something you can’t do with a regular coffee machine.
However, if you’re someone who needs a large amount of coffee, for a big household or dormitory, you should probably steer clear of them and go with a more traditional machine. These products can’t make a huge batch at one time – though there are some that can perform both functions, they are costly.
Besides the cost, you should also consider the size of the machine in question, especially if you want to carry it to different places. The size of the water tank is important as well since it limits the amount you can make before you have to refill it. Lastly, you should also take a good look at the brewing method used and whether you will need to buy special capsules or just use coffee grinds.
But let’s not dwell on all that for too long and finally move on to the product in question, the one I like the most, the Keurig K55.
Keurig K55/K-Classic Single Serve Coffee Maker
The Keurig K55 is probably the best-selling product this manufacturer has, a marked improvement over their previous models like the K15. Though it doesn’t have the insanely wide range of options that pricier models from the same company do, like the K250 or the K475, it still does an admirable job. It’s also more affordable for people who need it the most, like college students or single parents but it’s not suitable for offices or the like.
The options that it does have are numerous, and it can brew in most standard cup sizes – 6, 8 or 10 ounces. It is programmable, so it can turn off automatically, and it has a decently-sized, 48-ounce water tank so it can run for a while without refilling.
In the box, you get the Keurig K55 along with 4 K-cups, one water filter handle as well as two water filters, which is a decent deal for just under 100 dollars.
Features & Benefits
There are a few primary features that this product offers and I will go through all of them, one by one. I will compare them to the promises made by the manufacturer so you can get a better idea of the quality of this product.
Multiple Size Options
You know we’ve all been in that situation – when you want a cup of coffee, you get it, but it just isn’t quite enough. You want a bit more but not another full cup, maybe just half of one or a quarter of one. Still, you have to make the entire thing despite that and waste half of it. To avoid that, you need a coffee maker that has plenty of different size options and can meet your needs properly.
The Keurig K55 has a decent amount of size options and covers most standard ones – it can brew enough for a 6, 8 or 10-ounce cup. That will usually prove to be enough for most people, but if you want more than that you might be out of luck with this machine. Those options work properly though, and you won’t experience any overfilling or underfilling. You get exactly the cup size you asked for.
The largest omission here is the standard 12-ounce cup size, though you can get that by using the 6-ounce option twice. It’s awkward and more time-consuming, but functional. If you get a Keurig K55 reusable filter, this option becomes even more viable, and I do recommend buying it because it will also make cleaning up after making coffee much easier.
Larger, carafe options are also absent, but you don’t necessarily need that with a single serve machine. However, most top of the line products still have those options, and if you need them, you might want to look for a different product.
No matter which size option you choose, though, the cup will be done in under a minute and the machine won’t have any problems rising to the task. With it, you can make coffee for a bunch of people in a record amount of time.
Large Water Reservoir
This unit features a water reservoir that can hold up to 48 ounces of water when filled. You can brew at least four 10-ounce cups or up to eight 6-ounce cups before you need to refill it. This is useful because you don’t want to constantly have to refill the machine, especially if you aren’t the only person using it. I find this to be extremely helpful when some of my friends come over and I want to make coffee for all of them – I get everyone’s coffee done in no time at all.
If you’re someone who often uses a coffee maker for house parties or you just like to drink cup after cup while you’re studying, this will be great news. It’s great for an office environment as well since a lot of people can make coffee from it in a flash without the need for a refill.
It’s a solid water reservoir with a good lid, so you won’t experience any leakage, and you won’t have any trouble filling it quickly. It’s also removable so you can clean it and fill it with even less effort. Just put it in the dishwasher if you want, and it will be clean in no time at all. Descaling also shouldn’t be a problem, and you will find some instructions on that in the user manual if you need it. You can also buy descaling fluid as an optional extra with the K55.
However, if you want your coffee maker to be a bit more portable, a large reservoir is probably not what you want. This is not a bulky coffee maker by any means, and you will be able to find space in your kitchen or office for it. But if you’re looking for something you can take on your trips, this is not it, and you should look for something significantly smaller and easier to handle. You will find that this coffee maker is better suited to a home environment instead.
The Keurig hot K55 classic product features the ability to shut off automatically after two hours of inactivity, saving you some money on electricity. You can program this feature to work a bit differently or shut the machine off earlier, and the details on that can be found in the Keurig K55 manual.
You will probably find that the feature works as advertised; at least it did for me. The machine does shut off automatically after two hours, and that was quite helpful to me because I constantly forget to turn it off.
However, if you are using it at the office or at a party where it needs to be turned off so anyone can get some coffee at any time, you might want to disable the feature for the time being. You certainly can do that, since it is programmable and easy to use once you read up on it.
In case you want it to turn off in a shorter amount of time, you can adjust that as well. You can make it turn off after only 90 seconds of inactivity, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally leaving it on after make a cup of coffee and leaving for work.
I do lament the lack of an option to automatically turn on the machine when you need it, which would have been great. Some of my previous coffee machines had it, and I found it useful for saving time in the morning since I could program the machine to turn on and brew at a certain time. It’s just one less thing to worry about before work, you know?
If you want an option like that you might want to look elsewhere since you won’t find it on this product. It’s a great shame but what can you do, right? You get what you pay for in the end, and this is not an expensive machine.
You will most likely find the controls on this machine easy to use since they do have clear indications for what each button does. This is useful because you can tell what you need to press with a glance; you don’t need to sift through a bunch of different options to get to what you need. If you want a cup of coffee in a hurry, you will probably love that.
However, a lot of people these days prefer digital controls, and it is fair to say that digital controls can offer a lot more functionality than simple buttons like these. You can have far more finesse with digital controls, and a digital screen will allow you to see the options better in poorly lit environments. A lot more options can also be fit into the machine that way since they don’t have to take up physical space on the casing itself, as is the case with analog buttons.
You know what’s best for you, in the end, but I do like the controls as they are on this machine. I find them to be quite practical and so far I had no need for more than what’s offered here.
The only more complicated part of these controls is the programming of the shut-off timer, but a quick glance at the manual should be able to inform you properly on its use. After that, you probably won’t have any problems and will be able to set it exactly to your liking.
Another problem you might have with these controls is the fact that they lack some common options. For example, you won’t find any strength control options on this coffee maker, and if you want your coffee to be extra strong or mild, you will have to make do with what the machine produces. You should be aware of that when purchasing but if you have no need for such options you won’t find this omission to be a problem – however, it’s still worth mentioning since a lot of people like to have those options.
Easy Brewing With K-Cup Pods
If you’ve ever used coffee grinds to brew coffee in a machine, you know how messy it can all be. It took me almost two hours to clean up everything when I accidentally spilled some, and it got everywhere in the coffee maker, making maintenance a tiresome chore.
K-cups offer a neat, mess-free alternative. They are a combination of a container for coffee grinds and a paper filter. You can just put them into a machine without worrying and get a nice cup of coffee, then throw the K-cup out and replace it with another one to make more. It eliminates most of the mess associated with making coffee and leaves the machine itself in almost pristine condition so the cleanup process is as simple as it can be. This machine makes use of them, and that’s one of the reasons why it’s so simple to operate and maintain. That’s why it’s so well-suited for environments where it will get a lot of use by a lot of people.
Of course, while this makes for a faster, mess-free coffee making process, some people don’t like it. Having to use K-cups instead of coffee grinds certainly does limit the use of the machine, especially for hardcore coffee enthusiasts that would want to try a lot of different blends. You can’t make your blend and just put it into the machine – you have to go with the blends that are offered by the K-cup manufacturers, and you can’t stray too far from that without potentially ruining the machine.
Another reason why some people dislike using K-cups is the fact that they do cost a lot more than coffee grinds and the price can quickly rack-up. If you’re on a tight budget, this might be a significant problem for you.
This machine can only use K-cups – it can’t even use things like K-mug or K-carafe pods, so it is quite limited in that regard. You can forget about trying to use coffee grinds by themselves, which just won’t work. If you’re a hardcore coffee nut, you might want to pass up on this one and look for something else that might satisfy your cravings. However, for the average user, the utility this machine offers is more than enough, and the convenience of K-cups should outweigh their limits.
Customers have, for the most part, had overwhelmingly positive experiences with the Keurig K55. It’s mostly been praised by users for its versatility and ease of use, as well as the tremendous quality that it offers at an affordable price. Some users even called it the best Keurig coffee maker, though I wouldn’t go that far. You generally won’t find many people maligning this machine, and most love it.
The Best 3 Alternative to the Keurig K55
If you don’t find the Keurig K55 to be quite to your liking due to lacking that one option you need, you shouldn’t fret. You can find quite a few different alternatives out there, and I will present some of them right here.
Top 3 Products
Keurig K-Select Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker
The K-Select has a lot in common with the K55, but it is a better version of it overall. It offers one additional brewing size, a 12-ounce cup and it also has a slightly larger, 52-ounce, water tank. You can also set different strength options and program it to start up automatically, something the K55 can’t do. However, it also costs quite a bit more

Keurig K45 Elite Brewing System
The price of the Keurig K45 is relatively comparable to the K55, as are most of the core functions. However, there is at least one big difference between the two, and that is the fact that the K45 was discontinued due to a leaking problem which was solved in the K55. Because of that, it might be difficult to find it, but it is a comparable alternative to the K55.

Keurig K250 Single Serve, K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker
The Keurig K250 is a model that has quite a bit more versatility than the K55. It can brew in sizes up to 30-ounces, can take K-Mug and K-Carafe pods and has strength options. It also features a black and white touchscreen instead of buttons that the K55 has. However, it does have a smaller water reservoir than the K55, measuring at 40 ounces. The cost is also significantly higher.
